I switched my service to VONAGE and trust me there are no extra fees like the phone companies. I love it.

I was discouraged with the price of my long distance service through Sprint so I had changed over to using calling cards. After a while refilling them got old so I went to Packet8 broadband phone service. Now I pay $19.99/month (plus a few taxes and fees) flat rate and I have unlimited minutes to the US and Canada. We kept our land line with local service so we have a working phone in the house all of the time and now we use the Packet8 in place of our long distance. It's also great for my home business because I can 3-way call and have my calls forwarded to my cell. It's like having a second phone line in the house and you never pay more than the flat rate no matter how much you talk. To me it's a keeper. Yes, if the power or broadband goes out you will lose service, but you would anyway if you have a cordless phone too. You need to weigh your pros and cons. If you would like to check it out go here:
i tried to get vonage last year, and it wasn't available in this area yet, so i got an e-mail from packet 8 out of californis. it can be as low as 14.95 a month, for as much long distance as you want

Hope you live in an area where you can do that. Verizon has us by the thin hairs as they say. The google search sounds good.
